EDGAR® Online® analyst's book helps investors quickly decode company filings for better investments

New book released by EDGAR Online and J. Ross Publishing

South Norwalk, Conn. and Boca Raton, Fla. - April 6, 2004 - Experienced and professional investors often miss valuable indications of a stock's strengths or weaknesses that are buried in official company SEC filings such as 10-K and other forms. Now, with the help of a new book, "The EDGAR® Online® Guide to Decoding Financial Statements: Tips, Tools, and Techniques for Becoming a Savvy Investor," all investors can learn to zero in on the red flags and hidden gems in official company disclosures.

The book is published as a joint effort between EDGAR Online, Inc. (NASDAQ: EDGR) and J. Ross Publishing, Inc.

Best-selling financial author and EDGAR Online analyst Tom Taulli, said, "We recently had a very significant correction in the market, so having good analytical ability is important now. Unlike years past, you can't just throw a dart and make money. Stock selection is critical again, so you need to get under the hood and do your analysis."

The book shows investors how to perform reliable analysis with online data and tools, without spending hours poring over long, confusing documents.

EDGAR Online Chief Executive Officer and President Susan Strausberg said, "All the information an investor needs to gain an advantage in the stock market is available online. But few people have time to read it all. In the current climate of increased focus on corporate governance and compliance, the public has an even greater need to understand the complexities of public company reporting. We are excited to offer a book that will help investors effectively use company data to make profitable investments."

"The EDGAR Online Guide to Decoding Financial Statements" shows investors how to make the analysis process manageable. The book demonstrates ways to use available online research tools to:

  • Screen filings to focus on the most valuable data
  • Spot specific market triggers to make the best decisions regarding portfolios
  • Use checklists to quickly evaluate financial statements
  • Define a list of reports small enough to watch regularly and act upon

Taulli also shows readers what to look for in the "big three" financial statements. Most investors have at least glanced at balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. Taulli explains in a clear, easy-to-follow style what parts to focus on to quickly spot problems or strengths.

Stephen Buda, Vice President of New Business Development at J. Ross Publishing, said, "Until now, most of this information was available only in huge, difficult-to-read textbooks written in dry, academic style for college finance classes. 'The EDGAR Online Guide' is written in an easily readable, step-by-step style that hits every key element. It's perfect for all investors, including professionals, and anyone who wants or needs to truly understand what a company's financial statements reveal about its health."

Buda said buyers of the book will also have access to J. Ross Publishing's Web Added Value Resource Download Center, from which they will be able to download files to help them put Taulli's suggestions to work.
